Trail Overview
Walker Mountain is a scenic out-and-back offroad trail in western Arkansas's Ouachita National Forest, offering high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs a rewarding climb to a mountain summit. Spanning approximately 5.9 miles, the route begins off Morgan Springs Road on a well-maintained gravel forest road before transitioning into a narrow, single-track dirt path as it turns east. Over its course, the trail climbs from a starting elevation of 590 feet to a peak of 1,545 feet, accumulating over 1,080 feet of elevation gain along the ascent.
As the trail ascends Walker Mountain, vegetation becomes dense, and drivers should expect tight clearances with underbrush that will likely cause paint pinstriping. Wet weather turns the dirt sections into slick mud, adding a moderate level of difficulty to the climb. Near the end of the route, several dispersed campsites are tucked away, offering filtered views of Cove Lake through the thick foliage. Because the trail terminates at a dead end on the mountain, drivers must find a tight spot to turn around, making this route best suited for shorter wheelbases rather than long trailers.
Access Description
The trail is located within the Ouachita National Forest and is subject to US Forest Service regulations. No permits or fees are required to drive the route or use the dispersed campsites, but visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for changing weather conditions that can make the dirt sections muddy.
