Trail Overview

This is an extremely fun-filled trail. There are multiple popular hiking trails along the way, major climbs, good/fun obstacles, beautiful river crossings, deep mud holes, and some good flexing points to truly test that new or old suspension you have. This trail can be done either way, but it is more fun starting at the North Entrance/Exit (By Highway 21) and ending at the South Entrance/Exit (By Highway 16).

Difficulty

After a good rain, there will be several mud holes to journey through. There is a section towards the south end of the trail, after crossing "The Little Buffalo River", that will have a handful of mud holes. One of those mud holes has a soft bottom and will sink you in. There is a small bypass, but part of your vehicle will go through. There are a few ledges to go down. After a good rain, the water crossing can get extremely deep, but most of the year it is easily crossable.

Trail was very easy would rate it as a 3/10. Very beautiful with a nice creek crossing towards then end. We ran it from North to South.

Fun trail with stops for hiking/camping. Drove N to S on a busier Saturday. If you have moderate clearance and 4x4 this should be a casual trail.

Nice trail. Took it as a shortcut to Whitaker point most mud holes had a hard bottom. The larger ones had bypasses and I took them as I was by myself. The leaves were perfect.

There was a downed bike getting recovered by a tow truck. It was pretty dry out. So the mud holes were no issue and the creek crossing was shallow.

This is a beautiful Ride that starts out as a gravel road but quickly becomes a fun trail ,it’s a great trail for high clearance 4x4 , the river crossing is usually low most mud holes have bypasses ,would not recommended this for crossover suv vehicles

We drove the trail starting from the south enterance off Hwy 16. It had rained the night before which may the trail wet and muddy, but fun. Come up from the south, the trail was smooth and maintained leading up to the river crossing at Dixon Ford. The water level was lower and very manageable. Maybe a foot deep at best. The climb up out of from the river was challenging. My skid plates have some scuffs and scratches. The most challenging part was about a quarter of a mile after the river where you have to climb a well worn and rutred step shelf. My Subaru with a 2 inches lift was not able to tackle straight on. We had to build up a small ramp with rocks and I had to use a spotter. Otherwise, the mud pits were deep but there are routes around them. Afterwards the trail becomes much easier along the lines of a 2 out of 10. Great fun but do be prepared to get some pin stripes on a larger or full size vehicle.

Trail was very well kept. I rode N to S. Buffalo was quite low, no issues with that water crossing. There were only a couple of points that had me concerned about clearance, but I was able to maneuver through them. One was a rocky descent, about halfway to the river crossing, that looked like it had washed out a bit. Made finding a line that wouldn’t punch out my oil pan difficult. Second was a mud pit right after the buffalo. I was solo, so I chose to traverse around the rim to avoid getting stuck. Made it about halfway before I had no choice but to drop in and send it, it only seemed wide enough for a SXS.

Started from south to north and in my opinion it was way more fun! cool waterfalls/hikes on the way too. River crossing wasnt high, easy to cross. Mudholes are fun, theres a section before the interesection to Ryker that is the most difficult and its just rocky & steep hills, nothing crazy. For me it was easier than what is rated. Will have to return to stay on the campsites next to the road, very neat.

Traveled the trail from south to north. The water crossing was deeper than I expected and I recommend keeping your line to the right if you're crossing S-N (obviously Left if you're finishing the trail at the water crossing). Other than that there were some narrow spots for a full size. But shout out to whoever put in the chainsaw work! There was enough room for even my fat rig through every downed tree. This trail is rated a 5 and while I'm pretty new so I can't rate them 1-10 very accurately... If Alexander Mountain traveling uphill is a 5 then this trail is a 4 or maybe a 3... Deer Trap is rated a 5 as well, but I'd say it's at least a 6 or 7. If my wife were wanting to get used to being in the driver's seat while wheeling this would be the trail I'd take her to first. That's not a dig on my wife, She's a great driver but she's never went wheeling in anything other than the passenger seat. I think most 4x4 oriented stock rigs could make this trip assuming it's something more than a stock Subaru.

Huge shout out to whomever did all the chainsaw work on the trail very recently. There were no issues with downfall on the trail today. There are a couple of mud holes that are not too problematic and there is some red clay I area that can be tough when raining. The only part that is potentially a 4 in technicality is the portion just north of the Buffalo until you top out. Mostly a very easy to moderate trail.
