Trail Overview

Hunt for Old Foundation is an easy, scenic 4.3-mile gravel route in the Ouachita National Forest that is perfect for beginners, scenic cruisers, and overland campers looking for quiet dispersed camping sites. The trail begins at a spacious dispersed campsite and winds eastward through dense Arkansas pine and hardwood forest, climbing gently from 1,024 feet to a peak elevation of 1,298 feet. While primarily a maintained gravel road with a gentle average gradient, the clay-heavy surface can become quite slick and messy when wet, requiring cautious driving after heavy rains. Any stock high-clearance vehicle, sport utility vehicle, or four-wheel-drive can easily navigate this route during dry conditions, making it highly accessible for families and casual explorers. Along the way, the route offers lush forest views and opportunities to spot local wildlife amidst the peaceful mountain terrain. As the trail progresses, drivers will pass a historic stone foundation on the right-hand side of the road, which currently serves as a unique and rustic setting for a dispersed campsite. The trail concludes at a fork in the forest service road, giving adventurers options to continue their journey deeper into the national forest or double back. Due to the clay content of the primary dirt and gravel surface, traction can change rapidly during wet seasons, so checking local weather forecasts and forest service alerts before heading out is recommended. This route is highly suitable for SxSs, dirt bikes, and overland rigs looking for a quiet, shaded retreat with minimal technical obstacles.

A local stopped by and said the site was used as a CCC camp when the road was being built. Apparently there were a few lodges on site. Just down the road about 100yds is a structure in the ground the he believed was the out house. This location is a large area that could accommodate 4 vehicles easily with a fire pit on one end of the slab.
