Trail Overview

This maintained gravel route travels through a mix of dense hardwood and pine forest, open grassy clearings, and scattered rural properties. Portions of the road run alongside powerlines before transitioning into a shaded tree tunnel with long stretches of mature timber. The surface is primarily firm gravel with gentle rolling hills and broad curves, offering good visibility for most of the drive. One low-water crossing uses a concrete overflow pad, which may have standing or flowing water after periods of heavy rain. Stay on the established roadway when passing private property.

Difficulty

The maintained gravel surface, gentle elevation changes, and lack of technical obstacles make this an easy route in normal conditions. The only feature requiring additional attention is the concrete low-water crossing, where recent rainfall or elevated water levels may create deeper water or reduce traction, but otherwise the route remains suitable for most vehicles.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
