Trail Overview

This route trail heads from the Mount Trumbull Schoolhouse approximately 50 miles south of St. George, Utah. This is a fun and informational adventure into the Grand Canyon National Park with an overlook approximately 1500 feet over the Colorado River. You will pass fantastic scenery along the way, including cinder cones, lava flows over ridges, and many other geological wonders. You will also pass through property owned by the Bar 10 ranch, so please respect the area and watch your dust as you go by the ranch house as they host visitors in the wagons. If you want to add adventure to your trip, look them up for an overnight stay. One of the reasons to consider trailhead at the schoolhouse is there are no services south of St. George. By trailering to the schoolhouse, you can carry additional gas and provisions. When traveling in the Arizona strip, it is highly recommended that someone in the group carry a GPS communicator.

Ya, not a 2/10 for an adventure bike. Probably a 6/10 past the lodge. Tons of loose, softball sized rocks especially during the last descent to the trailhead. There were also a lot of embedded sharp rocks so be careful with the speed and low tire pressure. One of our riders bent a rim up pretty bad. Very doable if you are an intermediate rider and can pick a good line and deal with the rocks. Prior to the lodge, be careful for random short sandy sections. The sand is very fine and hides the ruts underneath.

There is an either/or shown on onX south of the bar 10 that is incorrect. Follow the whitmore sign, not the green trail there or you’ll come to a dead end and have to backtrack to reach the whitmore trailhead and overlook.

Whitmore Canyon is an awesome destination to get away from the crowds and seeks some blue skies and sunshine. We started this trail at about 11:00am and ended around 4pm due to the long side spurs that we took. (Can be done a lot faster). Bar 10 Ranch is pretty cool to see but pls respect them and keep the dust down thru their property. The view is amazing once you reach the canyon, and I highly recommend you take the trailhead down to the CO river. Awesome hike and the water felt great. Add this trail to your list, it’s a must do if you are in the area.

Lots of Rocks. Some good size rocks and pretty bumpy. We had a jeep and it handled it pretty nice. Be sure to air down for sure though. It’s worth the view
