Trail Overview
White Horse Lake and Sycamore Falls is an easy and highly scenic 7.3-mile point-to-point trail that is perfect for families, beginners, and overlanders wanting to experience the rugged beauty of northern Arizona. The route features a wide, graded washboard surface that climbs gently from 6,510 feet to 6,905 feet, with just 518 feet of cumulative elevation gain, making it comfortable for SxSs, stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, and high-clearance SUVs. One of the main highlights along the route is the turnout for Sycamore Falls, a stunning canyon waterfall that flows best in the springtime following winter snowmelt or a heavy rainstorm. A trailhead for the Sycamore Loop Trail is also located nearby, offering hikers a scenic trek and the convenience of a public pit toilet.
As the trail continues, it winds deeper through the ponderosa pines before culminating at the picturesque White Horse Lake and Campground. This popular seasonal destination offers visitors an established campground with online reservations, hiking trails, a boat launch, and pit toilets, though cellular reception is limited to a single bar of LTE. Because the area receives no winter maintenance, the road is typically impassable due to snow during the winter, and the campground remains closed during this season. Visitors should also expect the graded dirt to turn highly slick and muddy when wet, with potential minor flooding at low water crossings during seasonal storms.
