Trail Overview
This trail is an out-and-back trail. Tom Wells Road is a seasonally graded trail that's one and a half to two vehicles wide with a sand and rocky gravel surface. The route winds up and down small hills through the desert landscape, passing through small washes along the way. Be cautious of the occasional rutted areas that cross the road and can catch you off guard. The trail ends next to the Trigo Mountains in a sandy and hilly area with lots of small trails branching off for further exploration. This area offers excellent opportunities for off-roading and finding your own path through the terrain. There are many spur trails to explore and find dispersed campsites throughout the area.
Difficulty
This is an easy trail that's well-maintained due to seasonal grading. The main considerations are the rutted areas crossing the road and the small washes, both of which require attention but aren't technically difficult. The wider width makes navigation straightforward, and the sand and gravel surface is typical of desert terrain.
