Trail Overview
SS1160 is an out-and-back trail beginning off S1127 and traveling northeast toward the Wilderness area. This is a very natural, faint two-track that crosses open desert terrain and includes several natural drainage and wash transitions. These are fun, not technical, but more of a hunt to find where you cross. The trail is surrounded by desert creosote, with a few overgrown sections where pinstriping is possible. Navigation can be challenging in places, especially where the wash entrance becomes difficult to spot. Each storm can alter the drainage crossings and make the route increasingly difficult to follow. At the end of the trail are two spur options—one for dirt bikes and another suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Both continue along the base of the mountain in opposite directions and offer additional opportunities for exploring. This is a great trail for learning navigation, reading the terrain, and practicing natural trail transitions without technical obstacles. Not recommended in wet conditions.
History
The Peloncillos aren't just desert mountains—they've been a travel corridor for thousands of years. Chiricahua Apache used these mountains, stagecoaches later crossed the region, and early land managers recognized the mountains' importance for protecting watersheds. Today, 19,440 acres of the Arizona range remain protected as wilderness
