Trail Overview

Southern Silt Bed/Muddy Bypass is a moderate 1.3-mile trail designed for four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking to bypass the frequently muddy or silty lower sections of the Arizona Peace Trail near Alamo Lake. This route provides a slightly more technical alternative as it winds through the desert hills, keeping drivers out of the unpredictable silt beds below. Operators will navigate tight, bermed corners that transition into short, loose hill climbs and descents. These elevation changes, ranging from 1,237 feet to 1,363 feet, present off-camber sections that require careful line selection and steady throttle control. The trail surface consists primarily of dirt and loose rock, with sharp desert plants and rocks that pose a risk of tire sidewall damage. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs are highly recommended to negotiate the loose, steep inclines and off-camber obstacles. This area is home to wild burros and bald eagles, offering scenic wildlife viewing opportunities. Reliable cellular coverage is generally available with about two bars of LTE service throughout the bypass, making it a reliable and scenic connection when the lower AZPT is wet.
