Trail Overview

The Santa Maria River Run is an engaging 6.3-mile off-road journey designed for intermediate drivers seeking a scenic and sandy desert trek along the boundary of the Arrastra Mountain Wilderness. Carving through the riverbed wash, this route treats travelers to towering cottonwood groves, steep loose-dirt hills, and challenging sandy sections that demand airing down. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs are recommended to tackle the soft, shifting sand and the rutted, off-camber climbs out of the wash. Tight corridors with low-hanging tree branches will test vehicle clearance and require careful maneuvering to avoid trail pinstriping. Because the trail meanders along sensitive wilderness boundaries, staying within the established wash is critical, and drivers must pay close attention to all posted exit signage. Flash floods present a severe danger during the wet seasons, making it imperative to monitor weather conditions across the entire watershed before descending into the canyon. Cell service is non-existent throughout the low-lying riverbed, only returning briefly on the higher hilltops near the western trailhead. The route ends at its eastern terminus near the historic Palmerita Ranch House property, providing a memorable destination before retracing the route or connecting to surrounding desert trails.

Trail is typical Arizona desert. Some rocks, some hills, and a long sand wash to get to the ranch. Easily done by any off-road vehicle, but a full size truck is gonna get scratched up pretty good when you go through a section of river bottom trees. One water crossing right before the stranded bus, and lots of silt by the water.

Access Description

Drivers must stay strictly within the established wash to respect the adjacent Arrastra Mountain Wilderness boundaries and observe all posted signage. The trail terminates at the eastern end near the Palmerita Ranch House property, where visitors must respect private property lines. There is no cell service along the riverbed except on the western hilltops. Flash flooding is a serious risk in the wash; check weather forecasts and avoid the area during wet conditions or rainy seasons.
