Trail Overview

Soldier Pass is a legendary, permit-restricted Sedona trail that offers four-wheel-drive enthusiasts and SxSs a short but highly scenic challenge through iconic red rock country. Spanning just under one mile with minimal elevation gain, this route provides massive rewards with its dramatic red rock formations, including views of Coffeepot Rock and Morning Glory Spire. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and modified SxSs with a low-range transfer case are highly recommended to negotiate the steep, ledgy rock climbs and tight squeezes. Offroaders must navigate several technical slickrock steps and rocky obstacles, where precise tire placement is key to avoiding body damage from the scratchy desert brush lining the tight trail. The trail begins just north of Sedona's residential streets and climbs gently through the Coconino National Forest toward the wilderness boundary. Major waypoints along or adjacent to the trail include the Devil's Kitchen sinkhole and the Seven Sacred Pools, making this a highly active area for both hikers and guided tour groups. Because of its massive popularity and sensitive desert ecosystem, a motorized gate permit system is strictly enforced by the Coconino National Forest, requiring drivers to secure one of the limited daily permits in advance. This trail is best run during the cooler months of spring and fall, but it remains open year-round for those seeking a quick, memorable challenge in one of Arizona's most famous off-road destinations.

Need a 8inch clearance with good line choice. Took it in stock lx470 on 33s taking fun line no issues in the rain. No way this is a 7. 4 at most only due to space. I had about 1 foot extra in the tightest areas.

No idea why this trail is rated a 7, definitely more of a 4, teacup section would be a 5 at most. If you can do Broken Arrow you can do this trail. With that being said it is definitely beautiful and not too crowded when we went, just saw a couple of Jeep tours. Would recommend it for sure if you’re in Sedona, but if you can only hit one I’d do Broken Arrow.

Great trail, obstacles aren’t too technically difficult but the trail is very narrow leaving little margin of error in several spots in a larger vehicle. I did it in an R1T and that’s about as large a vehicle as I’d want to try it with.

Great trail. Got our permit. Took our time and parked and enjoyed the views. Teacup side trail was a bit more technical, but worth it

This is a awesome trail. You do need 4wd. I only had to us my rear lockers once because of some loose gravel going up a hill. Be sure to stop and look at the seven pools. To bad its a short trail.

Very tight at some points. Just a couple people on UTVs driving on the trail. Videos that I’ve seen online do not do it justice. Beautiful scenery. Wish the trail was longer

You need to register for a pass for this trail at recreation.gov. They give you the gate code to get in. There was only a couple of other vehicles, just a lot of foot traffic and bike riders. It’s an easy, fun trail.

Short out and back trail right near Sedona. Permit required but easily attainable from recreation.gov. They only allow I think 12 people per day so it isn’t crowded but you’re sharing sections with hikers, so expect some onlookers. The trail itself wasn’t very challenging but there were a couple of fun obstacles and some nice views.
