Trail Overview

Slavin Forest Road 687 lies within Coronado National Forest. Most of the trail is smooth sandy gravel with incredible views of Council Rocks. Once reaching the gate at Corazon Ranch and turning onto West Stronghold FR 688 the road becomes more technical and narrow with washouts and many creek crossings. A good section of the trail travels along a very rocky dried-out creek bed that will require decent clearance and good tire placement. With that said I was surprised to see several Subarus at the end of the road parking at the West Stronghold Trailhead.

Difficulty

The many creek crossings could become deep and fast after heavy rains. The rocky dried out creek bed is the most challenging section of the trail along West Stronghold FR 688

Very dry conditions. No water in creeks or washes. Beginning goes from pavement to maintained wide dirt road then on to unmaintained single vehicle dirt road. Did trail completely in 2wd. There is a gate to open and please close and clip as you found it. After the gate it gets extremely rocky as the trail is pretty much a river bed. Road ends at a hiking trail starting point. No developed parking but there are places and an area to get turned back around. Please stay on roads and trails due to the very high and VERY DRY grasses on the sides. There are many areas for camping once you turn off the maintained dirt road.

A few ruts, nothing too difficult. Dry stream bed near the end was a little rough. Definitely need some clearance to get through. It was dry now but in Monsoon Season it could fave flowing water.

Dispersed campers early on the trail. We headed to the White House ruins and back down.

First timer here went with a group of 5 easy going in a stock jeep wrangler 2 door. Stayed in 2 wheel drive all the way.
