China Peak is an exciting four-wheel-drive trail tailored for intermediate to experienced offroaders seeking a challenging climb with panoramic summit views in Arizona’s Dragoon Mountains. Spanning approximately 4 miles, this route begins off Middlemarch Road near the historic Abril Mine, ascending from an elevation of 5,374 feet to a peak of 7,089 feet. The journey starts with a series of bumpy ledges as it climbs toward "The Gate," leading travelers through the historic San Juan Zinc Mine at Gordon Camp. While early sections offer relatively smooth tracks after passing the gate, the route's technical nature soon intensifies with a technical rating of 6 out of 10. Drivers will encounter very rocky, rutted, and off-camber terrain featuring erosion, loose rocks, sand, and washes. The real test of driver skill begins as the road ascends the final stretch with a series of tight switchbacks and steep, loose climbs. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and capable SxSs are highly recommended to safely navigate obstacles up to three feet tall, including rocky ledges, short but steep grades, and potential deep water crossings with strong currents depending on the season. Along the way, adventurous riders will spot junctions leading to side roads, such as the ominously named "Switchbacks of Death," which are ripe for exploration.
