Trail Overview
The Rolls OHV Area East loop is a 12-mile desert route in the Tonto National Forest, circling Whirlpool Rock and starting from the East Trailhead off Highway 87. The trail features a diverse mix of terrain, transitioning from smooth, sandy wash bottoms on the western section to rugged, loose rock and off-camber obstacles. Elevation ranges from 1,525 feet near Saguaro Lake to 2,490 feet, offering views of Ship Rock, El Recortado, and the surrounding desert.
A demanding two-mile stretch along the southern portion of the loop features eroded washouts, off-camber sections, and loose, steep grades exceeding 30 percent. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle with low range is highly recommended here due to rollover risks, particularly for vehicles with independent front suspensions. After descending to Saguaro Lake, which offers spots for breaks or lakeside camping, the loop returns along the eastern leg via a narrow, rocky, single-vehicle track that climbs back to the main staging area.
Difficulty
The majority of the west side of this loop is easy-going, sandy wash road. However, the difficulty rating for this trail is earned by the two-mile stretch along the bottom "U" portion of the loop, in which several steep and loose climbs/descents with washout and erosion throughout are encountered. Extreme caution should be used, as rollovers are entirely possible with poor tire placement, especially in regard to independent suspension vehicles. Grades exceeding 30% may be encountered in some areas. The east side of the loop is a steep, rocky, loose, single-width route. Low range is highly recommended.
Access Description
The area is managed by the Tonto National Forest. A Tonto Daily Pass or an America the Beautiful Interagency Pass may be required for parking and recreation at developed sites. All off-highway vehicles must display a valid Arizona OHV decal, and vehicles must be street-legal or equipped with appropriate safety gear.
