Trail Overview

Avoid the crowds on east/west sections of The Rolls by sticking to the central corridor - this route stays along the mountain ridges for EPIC views. This seldom used route starts off easy with little elevation change as you drive down rutted out roads. As the trail progresses, you can find plenty of opportunity to take steep descents down into the washes and valleys. Stick with the trail to the finish point and end up at what can be a very secluded Salt River Cove (Cove 2) during the off season. The last third of the trail can get quite challenging as the rain washes out the descent paths on a near constant basis. Choose your lines carefully, approach the steep drops head on, and enjoy the scenery at the Salt River once you finish! Once you are at the cove, you can exit the same way you came in or cut across The Rolls to each the east/west trails and take those out. The second half of this trail consists of several steep hill climbs/descents back to back and can start to feel a bit tipsy. Cutting across to The Rolls East presents opportunity for a bit of rock crawling. Lots of opportunity for fishing/camping/shooting with some absolutely stunning views of Four Peaks and the Superstition Mountains.

Difficulty

As of the end of 2022, this trail is washed out with deep ruts (2+ feet deep), incredibly steep descent angles and large (2-3') drops immediately followed by steep descent paths (~30 degrees nose down on loose soil). Lockers or heavily modified vehicles are likely required due to lack of traction in the rutted out sections. Deep sand once you drop down into the washes. Watch for incredibly sticky/stinky mud when you get down by the water. Lots of potential for rolling over on second half of trail if you don't approach hill descents head on.

Wasn’t too busy late Sunday afternoon. Definitely see why the area is called The Rolls OHV area. Nothing unexpected until the top of the roller coaster. Some long sandy spots as well as some rocky patches. Highly recommend airing down. Not much even ground to change a flat. The rollercoaster is steep with some good sized divots and ruts. We used Jeep’s off-road cruise control (similar to Toyota’s CRAWL control). The whole right side is washed out with 3-4 ft drops. Found a bypass to going back up on FR1811 but want to try in the future; will probably need both lockers on. Some more challenging drops after the roller coaster but manageable with right line. Going to the lake is soft and deep sand. Wouldn’t try during or after rain. All the washes are flash flood prone. Also lots of blind turns. Drive with care and watch your speed. Saw a cross and candles on the side of the wash where someone lost their life

It’s a nice ride lots of ups and downs but the small downside to it is the oncoming traffic that happens a lot. Be aware of surroundings and courtesy of people coming or going on the same trail

With all the parking spaces to get to the Saguaro Lake full we took the following trail at the recommendation of the park ranger to have fun at the lake. The trail isn't too bad only two areas of concern. One very steep going down hill and the reverse was a little sketchy then another down hill that if your not careful there is a 2 foot drop that you'll be thankful for your skid plates. At the time of this review if you stay toward the right most side it's a little steeper, but you can avoid the drop.

Great trail with beautiful views. The downhill is not as bad as some make it sound and just about any vehicle could do it with a little care.

A lot of stock vehicles turning around at the steep downhill for good reason. Very rutted with large drop offs requiring a lot of line choice and throttle to get back up.

Decent trail but had to take alternative route about halfway through after the large hill descent due to a massive ledge drop. People set up rocks to make the ledge easier to pass but decided to skip this part and took a side trail that bypassed this obstacle.

Not a very hard trail, lots of fun though and quick way to get to the water. Definitely overrated on the difficulty scale, a stock truck could do it.

There is a decent of 200ft and about 25+ degrees at about half way that is well used for high clearance vehicles. Did not intend to use at night. After that, was able to use the wash to get to the beach. Took it back the next morning under crawl control.
