Trail Overview

Redington Pass is a very popular two-lane road with lots of dispersed camping on the western slope overlooking Tucson. This pass varies in difficulty from deep ruts and washouts with many full washes. Most of the western side can be traversed in a low clearance 2wd with caution but it's not advised. Airing down is recommended if completing the whole pass. The most difficult portion of this trail is the water crossing in the east valley. It is soft and muddy and should only be tackled in a high clearance 4wd when full of water. The views of the surrounding mountains are incredible along this long meandering trail.

Recently grated; water-spray trucks on non-contiguous sections really cut dust factor to some vs lots. Some cattle and calves near road but under shade trees. Only two on-coming vehicles for 20 miles.

Did the whole trail and fire warning is still at “Very High”. Seems recently graded and some fill dirt has been added throughout. Otherwise the only washboard sections are at the very beginning on the initial climb up and towards the end past mile marker 22. Lots of side roads to explore!

Road has been thoroughly graded which makes it much less difficult than it was recently. No more crazy ruts, I was doing 30-40mph when I had good line of sight ahead. Any vehicle that isn’t lowered could do this now.

Some local ranchers recently graded the middle section of the road so they could periodically herd cattle on it. They did a good job.

Some fairly deep ruts but no problem for my truck. Rough ride the first half from Tucson heading East. Overall agree with 3/10 rating. Great views!

Rough early on, was able to do it in 2WD for the whole thing but there were a few tricky parts at the start. Would recommend high clearance. Great ride after the rough start!

Super rough the first like 15 miles, lots of rocks from the rain and assumed neglect. Smoother after that.

Relatively easy typical rutted rocky washboarded mountain road. Drove west to east then down Cascobel Rd to Benson. first 1/2 going east is roughest. Then just washboard to "smoother" dirt road last 6 or so miles to Cascobel.

genteel road from San Manuel to bout 4 miles from entrance on tucson side, but still very doable in 2 wheel drive just a bit rough, wide road, no water at this time.

All of the water crossings were dry. Road was wide enough for a full sized truck with no risk of pin-striping along the way.

Western side for 12 miles had mild to medium ruts and numerous potholes. Slow going in some sections due to the surface conditions. Have seen less rough road surface in past years. Eastern 14 miles typical easy/3 road. Water in some low places but nothing deep. The eastern water crossing was dry.
