Trail Overview

Pumpkin Center Road (Forest Road 144) is an easy four-mile dirt trail ideal for standard high-clearance vehicles looking to explore the beautiful ponderosa pine forests north of Parks and Flagstaff. Connecting Forest Road 141 in the south to Forest Road 171 in the north, this flat and straightforward route rises gently from 7,272 feet to 7,417 feet with minimal elevation gain. Along the way, the dense forest cover occasionally breaks to reveal beautiful, wide-open mountain pastures and views of nearby peaks like Beale Mountain and Section Hill. It provides a peaceful, leisurely drive that serves as an excellent introductory route for stock SUVs or those looking to access dispersed camping spots and intersecting forest routes. As a multi-use road in the Coconino National Forest, the trail is also shared with hikers, mountain bikers, and campers looking for quiet spots off the beaten path. Dispersed camping is permitted in designated areas along the route, making it a great base camp for exploring the surrounding trail system, including nearby Raymond Lake and Spring Valley. Because the road is unmaintained during the winter months, snow and mud can make it impassable for standard vehicles, so the best time to visit is from late spring through autumn. Cell service is highly spotty throughout the area, so downloading offline maps before leaving Flagstaff or Parks is essential for navigation.
