Trail Overview
This wide, graded dirt road leads out to Promontory Butte and offers a very easy, scenic drive through a Ponderosa Pine forest. There are plenty of dispersed camp spots along the way, with only a few washouts creating mild dips in the road. The surface is mostly dirt with a few sandy sections. As you get farther out, the trail narrows slightly with larger washouts and potholes, and the trees begin to close in a bit. At the end, the road forms a loop, and on the far side near the rim, you’ll find a beautiful open grassy meadow. This portion of the loop is more rutted and rough, but it rewards you with nice filtered views through the trees overlooking the rim. There are many beautiful camp spots just off the road on the edge of the rim.
Difficulty
This trail is rated 2/10 due to the mostly graded surface and minimal obstacles. While the loop section becomes more rutted and uneven, most high-clearance vehicles can navigate it comfortably in dry conditions.
