Trail Overview

Nelson's Cutoff is a fast and flowy trail that bobs and weaves between the cactus and creosote which is the predominant plant life in this area of Arizona. There are no obstacles on this trail, only a couple of spots of erosion that need slowing down. You'll find 3 bars of service on this trail, but in areas like this, it can be spotty--offline maps are always a good idea. This area is part of the Arizona State Land Trust and must be accessed with a permit that can be purchased and printed online. The permits allow certain recreational activities, including camping, bicycling, bird watching, GPS-based recreational activities (geocaching), hiking, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle (OHV) usage, photography, picnicking, and sightseeing.

Difficulty

This is an unmaintained road, and while it seems mellow, the areas of erosion may become problematic, specifically after a major rain event. Roads, while not two lanes wide, are wide enough to let vehicles pass.
