Trail Overview

This trail starts out rocky and challenging as you drive through a rugged wash. Next is a winding mountain road with fantastic views of the valley below. There is a lot to see along the trail. Don't miss Gold King Mansion. You can walk through it, but please be respectful. The last portion of the trail takes you through a nice, thick forest, and you'll end at Hualapai Mountain Road.

Difficulty

Difficult: Deep washouts, challenging rock obstacles and steep climbs. Narrow spots with tight brush near Gold King Mansion and along Moss Wash. Avoid if heavy rain is expected. Not recommended for stock vehicles. High clearance, lockers and good articulation are needed.

History

The Gold King Mansion, built early in 1929, was used to entertain wealthy clients and served as housing for the foreman of the Gold King Mine. Much of the building remains intact due to its poured concrete construction, rare at that time in this part of Arizona. The mansion was used less than a year when the Gold King Mine failed following the October 1929 stock market crash. A kiosk at the site has a picture of the original structure.

Nice trial, some good tough lines. I’d recommend some good sliders or body protection. We did see a rattle snake and some mountain lion prints. YOU WILL NOT HAVE PHONE SERVICE THE WHOLE TRAIL.

The Trail head from Blake Ranch Rd is moderate difficultly with a 4 seater SXS. For an easier route enter from Flag Mine Road. Overall a fun day!

Very scenic, nice views. Expect some Arizona pin striping and some off camber and a few rocks. It may be difficult for a stock Jeep. We did see a few side by sides on the trail.

Trail is in rough shape. Willys drug on some large boulders. Tore up fenders from narrow areas. Took hard way back from trail high centered multiple times on boulders. I would recommend a lift.

started at wild cow campground and went downhill. definitely easier than starting at the bottom. Very deep ruts, sxs tilted up to 30 degrees on the mountain road, large rocks in the wash. Take a spare tire! Had to share the road with cattle in places. Not a high speed trail.
