Trail Overview

This is a beautiful trip--wow! Drive a 3-mile slot canyon and hike 2 narrow slot canyons off to the sides of the driveable one. This canyon is a long way from anywhere but do not let that scare you;the canyon drive and two short hikes go quite quickly. Caution: this trail crosses a lot of private lands and could be closed at any time. Please tread lightly and correct any problems you find. Pick up trash and stay on the existing trail. Alamo Road is a wide-graded road on which you can make good time if you are coming from Lake Havasu City. You probably will come via McGuffie Cabin if coming from Parker. The canyon can be driven in either direction. The northern part of Alamo Road has lots of Joshua trees. They are in full bloom in early March. The canyon is narrow but is easily driven. There are two slot canyons off to the sides. The first one is an unnamed wash entering from the northeast. The second canyon is Rawhide Wash which is larger, deeper, and longer. It starts wide but do not let that fool you. Continue in the wash until you get to the Alamo Road and return the way you came.

4/10? No. Near 60 miles of this trail is a well groomed dirt road that is so well maintained it has road signs and mile markers. The wash itself is three miles at the very south end, and has no real obstacles. Just a sand and gravel trail through a tight canyon. We started out at the top end thinking eventually we were going to get to it which we did, but as a result it was a 140 mile day. The canyon part was nice, but no way worthy of its rating and a disappointment on its length.

This trail should be broken down into two sections. The northern 50 miles of the ‘trail’ should be classified as a 1 (easy). Maggie Slot Canyon/Alamo Road/County Road 15 is a groomed/graded road. I drove for an hour trying to figure out where the canyon was. It’s not until you turn off the county road and get to the canyon itself does it become a trail.

The majority of this trail is on a well maintained dirt road. Once in the slot canyon there are narrow passages which a full size truck may have difficulty navigating. There are no obstacles on this trail only a lot of washboard. Ran entire trail in 2WD.
