Lockett Meadow Trail

Lockett Meadow Trail is an exceptionally scenic drive through the Coconino National Forest, perfect for camping and casual offroaders looking to escape into the high country north of Flagstaff. This dirt and gravel route climbs from about 7,280 feet near US Highway 89 to a peak elevation of 8,630 feet at Lockett Meadow. The route features a gradual elevation gain of roughly 1,400 feet, winding around the eastern slopes of Sugarloaf Peak. Navigating the trail requires no specialized offroad equipment under dry conditions, though airing down tires is recommended to cushion the ride against the relentless washboard surface. Dispersed campsites are scattered along the lower sections of the route, while the designated Lockett Meadow Campground at the top serves as a basecamp for hiking the renowned Inner Basin Trail. Due to high elevations, the road is seasonally closed during winter and early spring when snow makes it impassable. During peak autumn weekends, the area experiences heavy traffic.
