Trail Overview
If your idea of a great day on the trail involves technical rock crawling, challenging obstacles, and putting both your driving skills and your vehicle to the test, Judgment Day delivers. Located in the Table Mesa OHV area north of Phoenix, this demanding trail is best suited for experienced off-roaders who enjoy navigating steep ledges, boulder fields, off-camber sections, and tight rocky passages that require careful tire placement and frequent spotting. The preferred direction is south to north, allowing drivers to climb most of the major obstacles rather than descend them. The trail is open year-round, and no permits or fees are required. Because Judgment Day follows a desert wash for much of its route, it should be avoided whenever thunderstorms or heavy rain are in the forecast. Flash flooding can occur quickly, making wash travel hazardous. The trail is on BLM land and also crosses a section of private property, although there are currently no fences, gates, or signs marking property boundaries or restricting travel along the established route. This is not a trail for stock SUVs or novice drivers. At a minimum, vehicles should be equipped with high-clearance four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, 33-inch or larger off-road tires, front and rear recovery points, rock sliders, skid plates, and basic recovery gear. For the best experience, a vehicle with 35-inch or larger tires, front and rear locking differentials, at least 3 inches of lift, full underbody protection, heavy-duty bumpers and rock sliders, and a winch is strongly recommended. While the trail itself is relatively short, don't let the mileage fool you. The obstacles are frequent and technical, making progress slow. Most groups should expect to spend four to six hours on the trail, while larger groups or those tackling difficult lines may easily turn the trip into a full-day adventure. One of the rewards of Judgment Day is the beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery. The trail winds past towering saguaros, prickly cholla and barrel cactus, palo verde trees, and rugged desert washes. Wildlife sightings are common and may include coyotes, javelina, mule deer, rabbits, roadrunners, hawks, quail, and, on occasion, rattlesnakes. Cell phone coverage varies throughout the area and depends heavily on your carrier and exact location. Drivers should not rely solely on their phones for navigation or communication and should prepare with offline maps and use radios for communication. Before heading out, bring plenty of water, air down your tires for improved traction and ride quality, and travel with at least one other capable vehicle. Be prepared for occasional underbody contact, the possibility of trail damage, and long stretches of slow, methodical driving. For those with the right vehicle and the skills to match, Judgment Day offers one of the most challenging—and rewarding—four-wheel-drive experiences in central Arizona. And when the adventure is over, remember to pack out everything you brought in and pick up any litter you find along the way to help keep the Table Mesa OHV area clean and enjoyable for future visitors.
