Trail Overview

FS U2163 begins off Bartlett Lake Road near the Bartlett Lake area and heads south as a point-to-point route. The trail starts as a gravel road over a few rolling hills before dropping down into a wash. Once in the wash, the terrain changes to deep sand mixed with large rocks. The trail continues in and out of the wash, winding through the desert until it connects with Camp Creek Wash. This is a natural but frequently used trail; pinstriping from vegetation is likely. As you progress, the rocks become larger and the trail narrows. A washed-out obstacle with larger rocks near the end required some careful driving, and a Jeep Gladiator may drag slightly in that section. The trail is likely more comfortable for SxS vehicles, but a properly equipped Jeep can handle it. High clearance is recommended, and full-size vehicles or 2WD are not advised. Scenery is typical desert terrain, though a small canyon wall section provides a particularly nice view. The most challenging portion of the trail is the final 0.25 mile leading to the connector. Avoid the trail in bad weather, as the washes and sand could quickly become impassable. Located within the Tonto National Forest, a permit is required.

Difficulty

The trail begins as an easy route that can be driven with 2WD and good ground clearance. Once it drops into the wash, conditions quickly change as the trail narrows with overgrown vegetation, deep sand, and larger rocks. The terrain becomes more technical, and 4WD is needed, with careful wheel placement required in several areas.
