Trail Overview
FS 1556 starts off Trail 442 and quickly narrows into a tighter two-track with possible pinstriping from overgrown vegetation. This trail is not recommended in wet conditions, as past storms have created deep ruts and erosion throughout the route.
As the trail approaches the wash crossing, larger rocks begin appearing, and conditions become rougher. Use caution crossing the wash, especially after rain. On the far side are several large washouts requiring careful wheel placement.
The trail then turns left and climbs through a loose rocky section and a small rock garden where 4WD may be needed. After the climb, the trail widens and vegetation thins out into a more natural backcountry route.
Near the tank, the trail curves right and continues across a bumpy dirt-and-rock surface with scattered 6–8 inch rocks before zig-zagging through taller trees along the fence line.
The trail eventually ends near Half Moon Springs after passing a water tank. Livestock is common throughout the area.
Difficulty
Ruts left by big previous rain, tight vegetation, pinstripes, low trees, and rocks in the trail, 6-8” tall. No obstacles, nothing too technical, but watch wheel placement in ruts. Impassable in wet conditions.
