Trail Overview

The trail veers off of the East Edwin Road just after crossing the first wash. You turn north onto the trail. The trail weaves through some tight spots in trees and cacti. The mud holes can get big after a rain, but the bottoms are mostly sandy. The main trail is the most used, but there are several sidetracks that return to the main trail. Be careful, as there are many side trails that wander off in different directions. Eventually you get to a steep hill that is the gateway to the inner Tortolitas. This section and beyond requires a bit more ground clearance and skill. A steep step up and down leads you out to the old windmill and overlook. This is a great campsite and viewpoint.

Difficulty

Most of the trail is an easy dirt track. The rating is due to some mud holes that remain weeks after rainfall and the step up and down towards the end of the trail.

Edwin's Road can be accessed via 2wd vehicles, the East Cochiese trail can be done with a higher clearance 2wd for most of the trail, there are a few step ups that might require 4wd (4h) but it all depends on your level of driving experience. this is a great trail for a beginer to practice their skills. the only portion of the trail that absolutely required 4wd (4l) was the egress from the windmill. the last 300 ft of the trail drop in to the windmill is steep, and ingress was not an issue, getting back up did require 4l and I don't know if I'd try this in a full size vehicle or truck. we took the Cochiese trail past the windmill and the trail gets narrower and narrower and deteriorates to very rocky path with some large step ups. the trail on OnX looks as if it takes you all the way behind the Tortolitas and Dove Mountain into Marana, but the trail ends abruptly at the Carpenter Ranch Conservation Area. we made the trip in an older 4runner smaller and narrower than any modern 4x4, don't think a full

out to Powerline trail can be done in a 2WD vehicle , probably with standard clearance. High clearance required after Powerline, and 4WD to make it all the way. The "5" rating is accurate for second half of the trail.

I have some photos on my Canon camera, but I am just leaving this to inform people, it gets pretty squirrelly right before the end, about 400 yds before the windmill. I am in a 8" lifted ZJ so it wasn't horrible for us but it does look like the rocks have seen metal contact recently. There seems to be a line on the right side that looks a bit easier.

trail was dry but many ruts left over from past rains. No grading done by state. State land. Reasonable speed about 10-12 MPH, slower for Ruts.

This was a fun trail. There are many off-shoots to explore, so it is not just a down and back. There are also a few hills to climb. The trail dead-ended up on a hill with an old windmill. Great views from this top. Trail was in good condition. No washboarding.
