Trail Overview

Copper Canyon bypasses interstate traffic and provides an escape from the heat. Making its way from Camp Verde to Cherry Road, this trail climbs more than 1,500 feet. Water flows on the lower half of the trail during parts of the year, so be sure to use caution. Take care to shut gates behind you as you travel along the trail.

Difficulty

Copper Canyon has several rocky climbs that change every time it rains, giving way to ledges over 24" tall and deep cross-axle washouts. If water is present, drivers should approach any water crossings with caution.

The entry to the trail has been eroded from water flowing through it. You will need high clearance four-wheel-drive. And if you do the whole trail, there’s a section where you are climbing out out of the valley. We were running the trail from the north to the south and there’s a washout that is fairly deep and a rock outcropping that is between 13 and 14 inches high that you have to navigate.

Do NOT take anything short of a built rzr or 4x4 on this trail unless you’re really good at picking your lines. I’m an experienced rock crawler and I had no business taking my Tacoma through there, I took the trail to bypass the 17 on my way to phoenix because of traffic. It was a mistake, definitely be ready to lock in if you’re gonna do this trail in your daily rig. A built rzr would eat the trail up tho. I was stacking rocks under my tires on this trail, granted I am driving a 4x4 open diff almost stock suspension Tacoma.

We went from bottom to top and at the beginning of the trailhead it was really washed out from a storm in August. Big boulders. Rough terrain. The rest of the trail was easy to navigate but there were parts that were exciting and a bit challenging. Spring water still running and saw a couple doe but northern wildlife. This was just the beginning of our 75 mile RT ride for the day. Set us up for a great ride.

Took on this trail with a stock jeep wrangler 4 door and I didn’t know what I was in for! Learned a lot with my passenger knowing how to direct me but although I took this on, until I get it lifted I wouldn’t do again.

fairly easy going for Super Doodie aka Big 💩. lots of fun and very scenic trail. would not hesitate doing this with stock jeep without lockers. saw one doe 🦌 in the dry creek bed. we ended up going to Porcupine Mtn before heading back to I17.

Pretty simple and fun trail. Some stops to scout the smooth line but nothing crazy. Took about an hour and a half taking it easy.

Trail is open and runs through a wash, flash flood awareness needs to be taken. Definitely higher clearance and four-wheel-drive is a must. Some rock face climbs that are short but steep going from Cottonwood the 17.

I run an 86 lifted Ford ranger 4x4 and I recommend bringing a spotter along. there are 4 bad areas. I made it ok and any danger was to the truck, not me. Really a pretty area but I was glad it was over. I guess I should say I'm not an experienced rock crawler and thought about turning around more then once.
