Trail Overview

Broken Arrow is Sedona's quintessential off-road trail, offering unbeatable slick rock obstacles nestled among the towering red walls of the surrounding landscape. Many would argue this trail offers the best views in Sedona, which makes it popular for all types, including hikers, mountain bikers, and off-roaders. The grip of the rock and easy-to-follow track makes this one of the easiest trails on which to experience heart-pounding ascents, descents, and cross-axle ditches in relative safety. However, inattentive or careless driving can have significant consequences amidst the cliffs and large crevices on this trail. Pay attention, and you'll enjoy one of Arizona's best off-road tracks. In addition to steep ascents and descents, expect tight turns through trees, narrow trails which may require you to back up while meeting oncoming traffic, and large crevices that challenge approach and departure angles. The most significant obstacle, however, is the Devil's Staircase. This series of ledges requires a good amount of ground clearance and is packed with rocks and holes that add additional difficulty. The best path to follow is the well-worn track down the middle used by the Pink Jeeps, but beware, once on the track, you will likely slide down step by step, even when applying full brakes. Take it very slowly and only go down this obstacle with the flow of traffic. The entrance to this trail is a neighborhood, so do not air up or down at the trailhead and avoid creating excessive noise on your way to the trail. There is not a lot of parking available, so it also isn't recommended for unlicensed vehicles. Finally, this trail is exceptionally popular with enthusiasts and heavily used by tour companies. Please be respectful and allow tour companies to pass whenever possible;they ARE faster than you. Take special care when stopping or parking that you are out of the way and allowing room for other rigs.

Difficulty

This is a real 4-wheel-drive trail, although the ledges are manageable with careful tire placement. By far the toughest spot is "The Steps." They require very high ground clearance. The most aggressive stock SUVs can do them, but most stock vehicles will bottom out, so skid plates are recommended. Trail is very narrow and backing is sometimes required to pass. Not recommended for extra wide and extra long vehicles.

Not too much traffic on memorial weekend, steep climb up to submarine rock, lost a little traction, did devil's staircase twice, can be a 10 or a 3 depending on your line. Chicken Point was a nice scenic spot for pictures. Passed 4 pink jeep tours and everyone was respectful.

Great day with light traffic. We started at 9:00 which I think was the move as everyone seemed to be arriving as we were headed out. Fun trail with amazing views. I would recommend skid plates on longer wheelbase rigs

This is probably the limit for my Crew cab F-150 long bed on 35's. I'm glad I have Rock sliders and skid plates.

Great trail with amazing views. Never having run this before, I wasn't sure how busy it would be, and was somewhat surprised that besides the ubiquitous Pink Jeeps, there were only a handful of other vehicles cruising around. 100% worth it. Do it!

Great late afternoon on the trail. Aired down to 20psi and ran mostly 4hi disconnected. 4lo for a few obstacles but never locked up. Handful of other vehicles but didn’t feel crowded. Also a handful of Jeep tours but nothing too bad. If anything, as a first timer out here I don’t mind sitting back and watching their lines.

Fun trip and great way to see the beauty of Sedona. Did it with stock Mojave on 35s with a couple scrapes in the plates but nothing horrible. A little crowded but not overly do and pretty friendly groups.

First time doing Broken Arrow and Devils Staircase and it did not disappoint! I was in a stock Tacoma 4x4 trd offroad. For those reading this with a similar vehicle you can definitely do it, but expect to scrape a lot! I aired down to around 18psi and had a spotter. The trail was normal and not too dusty, and there were a few Pink Jeep tours but it definitely wasn’t crowded. Views were definitely worth it! Overall a great experience and even more so to have conquered it in a stock vehicle!

Would definitely give this trail a 10/10. As someone who isn’t very experienced with steep, technical climbs up obstacles this was a great introductory trail with plenty of more technical options. On top of that the views are great. We had our mid size 4Runners all the way up to a Jeep gladiator and a Ram power wagon prospector XL which all fit just fine through the trees. If you take your time, air down and give good controlled throttle you’ll make it up everything just fine. With 33’s I only gently scraped once and barely tapped my hitch. For being such an iconic trail as well there really wasn’t much traffic. The pink jeeps will be coming through on a schedule, usually in packs of 3, so keep an eye out for them as they move pretty quick. Having some kind of radio or walkie talkies is a huge help for navigating with larger groups as there are a few bottle necks.

Took on Broken Arrow in Sedona with our stock 2024 Ford Bronco Big Bend—what a ride! The trail’s moderate rating is accurate: slickrock climbs, tight turns, and scenic views at Submarine Rock and Chicken Point. The Bronco handled everything confidently without mods. OnX Offroad was a game-changer: offline maps, GPS tracking, and user tips kept us on course and informed. Trail traffic was manageable, and everyone respected trail etiquette. We did not air down but it would be better for comfort and traction. We didn’t need recovery gear but had it just in case. Highly recommend starting early for the best light and fewer crowds. Broken Arrow is a must-do for off-roaders, and OnX made it even better.

Fun trail. Lots of pink jeep tours. They were all very courteous. Views at the top are absolutely incredible! Get to this trail EARLY. It was getting real crowded by the time we were on the way out. We were in a lifted rubicon with 35’s and the whole trail was easy (but really fun!) with that rig. Would be much more challenging for vehicles with less clearance and poorer approach/departure angles.
