Trail Overview

Box Canyon, located just southeast of Florence, Arizona, is a scenic and moderately challenging trail that winds through a dramatic, high-walled desert canyon. A longtime favorite among 4x4 and off-road enthusiasts, this route highlights the rugged beauty of Arizona’s Sonoran landscape. Recent flash floods have completely reshaped the terrain, widening the canyon, altering its natural flow, and transforming many of its well-known features. Iconic obstacles like Poser Rock have changed dramatically, now offering an even greater challenge for those seeking a true off-road adventure. The floods have also carved out new squeeze sections and enhanced the trail’s standout feature, the iconic Box Canyon Waterfall. Beyond the main route, the trail connects to historic and scenic destinations, including the Martinez Mine, the Coke Ovens, and an extensive network of surrounding off-road trails.

Difficulty

Moderate terrain with some technical sections. Mostly dirt, sand, and rock with some wash sections. Occasional loose gravel and large boulders. Includes narrow passages, rock shelves, ledges, and tight turns. Optional bypasses do not exist after the flash flood. High-clearance 4x4 vehicles recommended for obstacles with good ground clearance should be fine, but some sections may require careful tire placement. Low-clearance vehicles should avoid the canyon as the flash floods have changed the terrain.

The trail was great. We got a point where we had to turn around due to a rocky obstacle where my gladiator's longer wheelbase would not clear the rocks.

Extremely easy fast and flowy on dirt bikes. Very beautiful in the canyon. Been over the 'waterfall' or 'ledge' on bikes and sxs, and its pretty moderate on both. Definitely need clearance on a 4x4 or sxs for those little parts.

Great time on the trail! Expectedly busy, but the vibes were high! The canyon is a unique place when comparing to the openness of the majority of the AZ trails. We came across three obstacles that were no problem for my rig and stock Rubicon. We also took the canyon all the way to the 60 via Mineral Mountain Trail. There are some breathtaking views once you get out of the canyon. Definitely worth the trip. All in all we were on trail for about 5.5 hours. That’s with a few stops for food/obstacle crossings/pee breaks.

Excellent day on the trail! As others have posted, the trail is a lot different since the heavy rains that took place in September or October. What once were some small outcroppings of rocks have now become obstacles you have to get over. There are two major obstacles that you will face. When traveling from Southwest to Northeast, the first stop school you come upon is not bad. There's a rock on the right side that seems jagged you have to do your best to not put your tire way up on that but focus on putting your tire on the rock to the left. The second obstacle will require you to put your passenger tire on a ridge... that one is more challenging and I know some folks have turned around and avoided it. With a good spotter and properly aired down tires, you should be able to make it through that no problem.

We love this trail, the canyon is so beautiful. The recent rains have really changed things though. There are two really significant obstacles that any stock vehicle should not attempt. Careful tire placement is key. We decided to go out a different way so we didn't have to tackle these obstacles twice.

About a mile into the south entrance, there is a tight spot with a big jagged rock that we weren't able to get through, eve some side by sides were having trouble. If you're going through in a truck/SUV, I'd highly recommend sliders and underbody protection to attempt it.

Fairly easy to get through the canyon itself with around 4 narrower choke points the last one being the most technical, arower vehicles with a shorter wheel base are king here due to slightly tight corners but dont let that scare you off if youre a little longer, still not hard to navigate, it will just require a little more attention. The last choke points will require you to get your one side set of tires up on the side wall of the canyon and the other set on a pair of nearby rocks, for this i highley reccomend your rocker panels be at least 14” high off the ground.
