Trail Overview
715 Main is a single-lane rocky trail that skirts the hills and prairies of this area of the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests. These forests are predominately made up of Pinion and Ponderosa Pine, as well as Juniper trees. The prairies are mostly chaparral and grassland which are grazing lands for cattle. Most of this route is in the trees, but you'll see the prairie from the scenic vista and then drop into it toward the South end of the trail. Wildlife such as elk, mule deer, javelina, turkey, and mountain lion are common in this country, and the area is popular with hunters. Thus, there are many side trails that lead to small secluded campsites back off the main trail. There are no major obstacles along this trail, though there are sneaky rocks and erosion, as well as water damage that might be exacerbated after monsoon season or during a moisture event. Cell phone reception is intermittent at best along the route so offline maps are recommended. There is a small climb up Juniper Ridge but other than getting up onto the plateau, there isn't much loss or gain along this trail. This trail is far from immediate services and thus the traveler should be prepared with emergency food, water, and appropriate clothing. Be sure your vehicle is in good working order, and you have tools and equipment with you for flat tires or minor issues.
