Trail Overview
Trail 28089 is an out-and-back route that appears to have seen very little traffic in recent years. The trail is overgrown and natural, so expect pinstripes from brush and trees along the way. The route is mostly gravel with a few scattered rocks up to about 12 inches. Vegetation along the trail includes Palo Verde trees, prickly pear cactus, and numerous beautiful saguaros, giving the trail a classic Sonoran Desert feel. There are a few minor off-camber sections, but nothing particularly technical early on. The trail winds around the hills before descending into Cow Creek Wash. The entry into the wash can feel slightly off camber, after which the route continues through the trees before turning left to follow the Cow Creek wash. As you progress through the wash, you’ll encounter a rock garden, with larger boulders appearing around the bend. The marked trail turns right and climbs out of the wash, crossing over to the opposite side of the creek. Drivers could technically continue through the wash, but this section becomes a larger rock garden with bigger boulders before reaching the other side of the creek. Suggest a highly modified high clearance 4WD to complete the latter section in the wash. Following the main trail takes you up over a hill through tight trees, where pinstripes are likely. The route then drops back into the wash, where you’ll cross a few larger boulders before the trail ends at a bottleneck and transitions into a narrow ATV / motorcycle trail. Arizona State Trust Land permit required. Limited traffic means overgrowth and other trail obstacles are possible over time.
