Trail Overview

This is the gem of trails and a must-see spot in British Columbia. The Salmon Glacier Road takes you up to one of the largest Glaciers in Canada that you can physically drive to. There are a number of pullouts to take in the views of the glacier from a distance as well as nice and close. You have to cross over the US Border into Hyder, Alaska initially but the route brings you back into Canada where the road is a dead end once you get up past the main lookout. This is 100% one of the nicest places in Canada to put your eyes on. There are a lot of Grizzly and Black Bears in the area as there is a Salmon feeding/bear viewing platform just as you cross over the border into Alaska about 1 mile from the town of Stewart. Bring bear spray.

Difficulty

The road starts off well groomed but quickly turns into deep potholes, heavy rutting and washboards. the road climbs from 151ft elevation to 3700+ ft and has some steep drop offs. However the road is wide and easily driven if you take your time and pay attention.

This road does have some potholes but they are not very large. Several sedans were driving this. It’s a 1 or 2 trail at most. I drove it in RWD stopping and starting on the steeper uphill portions to take pictures with no wheel spin getting started again.
