Trail Overview
Starting from the Santa Maria Ejido, this off-road trail takes you about three-quarters of a mile through a local neighborhood before opening up onto the expansive salt flats behind the sand dunes. Ideal for motorcycles or quads, the ride through the flats is generally smooth, though be mindful of the surface conditions, and if it appears to be wet, use caution before proceeding. While most of the route offers easy riding, some sections have deep, 18-inch ruts, so checking tide conditions beforehand is essential. At the time of mapping, the area was dry, and once past the rough spots, the ride becomes smooth and enjoyable. The trail eventually merges with a more frequently traveled road, leading you to a well-maintained route between the Pabellon RV Park and the highway. Here, you can either head left towards the highway and loop trailhead or turn right for beach access near the RV park.
Difficulty
Exercise caution when navigating the salt flats along this route. Although it was mapped in dry conditions, these low-lying areas can quickly become treacherous after rain or storms, turning into mud traps that can immobilize vehicles. To avoid potential recovery challenges, always stick to existing tracks. If no visible tracks are present due to weather, it's best to turn back to prevent getting stuck.
