Trail Overview

Canon del Paso de la Luna, or Moon Pass Canyon, offers a dramatic shift in scenery from the warm reds and browns of the approach trails leading to Moon Pass Canyon. As you ascend toward the 1,461-foot summit, the terrain transforms into a surreal moonscape--grays and silvers dominate the landscape, giving the area an otherworldly feel. The trail surface is a rugged mix of rocky outcrops and sandy stretches shaped by constant wind erosion. There are three distinct paths through the summit, each offering a different line--but be advised, some routes may be impassable depending on seasonal conditions such as rain or shifting sand. Scattered along the way are small rock drop-offs that can be concealed by loose sand, requiring keen attention and cautious driving. This ever-changing, high-desert route is as unpredictable as it is stunning.
