Trail Overview
Mines Road, historically known as Manganese Road, played a crucial role in transporting manganese ore from the Dean & Chapter Mines to the Avon River, where it was shipped for export. Today, the trail connects two sections of the ATVANS Route 101, making it a key link for off-road exploration. The eastern end of Mines Road begins in Upper Falmouth as a well-maintained, residential, two-lane gravel road. While generally easy to navigate, drivers should watch for occasional potholes and loose gravel. About 3 km in west of the Eldridge Road intersection, the road narrows slightly and transitions into more rugged terrain. Expect occasional muddy sections and potential washouts, especially after heavy rain, adding an extra element of adventure to the route.
History
Mines Road, historically known as Manganese Road, has deep roots in Nova Scotia's mining heritage. In the early 20th century, this route was constructed by the Nova Scotia Manganese Company to connect the Dean and Chapter Mine near New Ross to the shipping hub at Benjamin Mills. The road played a critical role in transporting high-grade manganese ore to the Avon River, where it was loaded onto vessels for delivery to industrial clients in Canada and the United States. At its peak in 1912, this route supported year-round operations, overcoming the seasonal challenges of Nova Scotia's rugged terrain. Manganese mining along this corridor flourished for a brief but intense period. The Dean and Chapter Mine, along with other nearby operations, supplied ore for use in glass manufacturing and industrial paints, fetching prices as high as $80 per ton--a considerable sum for the time. However, the industry faced setbacks, including a devastating fire that destroyed the mill and financial difficulties that led to the mine's closure later that same year. Despite attempts to revive operations, the road gradually transitioned from a bustling industrial artery to a quiet trail traversing Nova Scotia's scenic wilderness. Today, Mines Road stands as a testament to the region's mining past, offering trail users a unique glimpse into the history of early resource development in the province.
