Trail Overview
Simpson 1000 is a 6-kilometer (just under 4-mile) out-and-back gravel trail that has become increasingly overgrown in recent years, now ending earlier than it once did due to dense vegetation and tree growth. The trail is single-lane width, with brush heavily crowding the sides and some low-hanging branches overhead, especially in the early sections. The first kilometer (heading east to west) is the most enclosed, but the trail opens intermittently with patches of open space, offering bursts of colorful wildflowers in season. Despite the overgrowth, the trail surface remains solid and smooth, with no significant potholes, making it manageable for high-clearance vehicles. Signs of bear activity have been observed in the area -- travel cautiously and respect the wildlife.
Difficulty
The trail surface is in good condition, but the narrowness and heavy vegetation make it best suited for narrow rigs or solo vehicles. Expect pinstriping if you're not in a compact vehicle, and avoid bringing trailers.
