Trail Overview
This is an easy out-and-back to Premier Lake Provincial Park, near Skookumchuck. The wide, graded road is washboarded in places and serves as a busy access route for park visitors, including vehicles towing boats and trailers. The route is generally easy and well graded. The stretch closest to the park may be watered during the busy season to reduce dust. Expect frequent two-way traffic, and watch for fast-moving vehicles, especially those towing boats or trailers. Near the end, it leads to the park’s established campground and lake facilities. There is no dispersed camping along the road; overnight camping is available at the provincial park. Premier Lake lies against the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains in the East Kootenay region. At the park, visitors can enjoy the lake, fishing, boating, day-use facilities, and fee-based campsites. The park also includes four smaller lakes: Canuck, Yankee, Cow, and Quartz. Cell service is limited and intermittent, with about one bar reported in the area. Reception may fade in and out.
History
Premier Lake Provincial Park was established in 1940 and named for William Smithe, who served as premier of British Columbia from 1883 to 1887. The nearby Skookumchuck prairies were settled by homesteaders and ranchers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Premier Lake is a popular regional destination for fishing and other lake-based recreation.
