Keefer Lake FSR to Holmes Lake Rec Site is a scenic three-mile dirt trail ideal for four-wheel-drive high-clearance SUVs, trucks, and SxSs looking to explore pristine lakeside backcountry. Starting as a spur off Keefer Lake Road near the lodge, the trail winds along the northern backside of Keefer Lake, offering beautiful views of the water. With an easy technical rating of 3, the elevation ranges gently between 4,449 feet and 4,560 feet, with only about 187 feet of cumulative climbing. Despite its approachable nature, drivers should remain alert for sections of heavy washboarding, deep potholes, and narrow spots where brush may scrape wider vehicles. The route concludes at the Holmes Lake Recreation Site, a primitive lakeside destination that can accommodate three to four trucks or two small campers. Near the end of the main road by the smaller lake, offroaders can find several side-spur trails that offer excellent mudding opportunities, particularly during wetter spring and early summer months. This trail is perfect for a quick, scenic day trip or a quiet overnight camping escape, providing easy access to a secluded mountain lake setting.
