Trail Overview
High Bar Road begins at the junction with Jesmond Road and climbs gradually toward the lookout at Cougar Point, following the west side of the Fraser River canyon. The route is a gravel and dirt road with a consistent climb and sweeping canyon views as elevation is gained. The surface varies between compact gravel and loose dirt, with occasional washboard, shallow ruts, and rough patches depending on weather and maintenance. The road travels through dry interior terrain with open slopes and increasing exposure in places. Sightlines alternate between open sections and tighter corners, with limited shoulders and infrequent pullouts. The route ends at a scenic lookout overlooking the Fraser Canyon and surrounding hills. Stick around until sunset, you won't be disappointed!
Difficulty
This is a non-technical gravel road with steady grades and no significant obstacles in dry conditions. Loose gravel, narrow sections, limited pullouts, and dust are the primary considerations. Difficulty increases briefly with rain or erosion, but overall driving remains straightforward for vehicles with basic clearance. This trail goes as far as Cougar Point, but if you continue on, the road has very steep grades going down.
History
High Bar Road provides access to the High Bar area and surrounding lands and follows historic travel routes along the Fraser Canyon. The road continues to serve as a local access corridor and scenic route through this dry interior landscape.
