Map Layers for Upland Bird Hunting
Use case examples to help you get the most out of your Map Layers.
Find additional hunting lands.
In addition to commonly used public lands like national forests and BLM, check for Walk-In Areas and Possible Access opportunities to expand your opportunities.
- Possible Access Map Layer: Some private entities and non-profits allow hunting on their lands. An example is sometimes seen with timber companies, which is fortunate because timber lands logged within the last 12 or so years can offer prime hunting—especially when near farmland. Tap into Hunt Map Layers, open a specific state, and then toggle on Possible Access.
- Voluntary Public Access Map Layers: While more than 20 states offer walk-in programs that incentivize landowners to open their properties to hunting, not every state does. To check yours, tap into Hunt Map Layers and then your state-specific layers. Each state calls these programs something different; examples include North Dakota’s Private Land Open to Sportsmen, Georgia’s Voluntary Public Access, Montana’s Block Management Areas, and Kansas’s Walk-in Hunting Access.
Turning Map Layers on and off.
Map Layers, found under Hunt Map Layers in the lower left corner, are organized into categories. For example, crop layers are under Trees, Crops, and Soil, while state-specific layers like Possible Access are found under that particular state.
Tap the toggle next to a Map Layer’s name to turn that layer on (green) or off (grey).
Key in on habitat diversity.
Areas with multiple types of habitat offer birds food, shelter, and water in a relatively tight package, helping them meet their daily needs while avoiding predators. You can use their protection strategy to your advantage by finding edge habitat. For example, look for public areas adjacent to corn fields.
