Description
The California Trail Overlook path is a short hike connected to the California Trail Interpretive Center immediately west of Elko. The short hike presents visitors with a couple different options to various overlook spots, though at 1.4 miles of total trail, most able walkers can easily cover all of the paths in a visit. The trail follows a gravel ADA-compliant path as it climbs from the front doors of the visitor center. At .15 miles in, the trail forks, with the right fork offering a small loop called the South Fork Overlook Trail, passing by a couple interpretive signs and areas of historical significance. The left fork heads up the California Trail Overlook path, first coming to a bench overlooking the Humboldt River valley below, as well as the Ruby Mountains in the southeast distance. Those looking to continue their walk can proceed up the primitive single track path to the higher viewpoint which offers a bench to rest at and a couple more interpretive signs explaining the significance of this area to past travelers. The path is open year round, however is subject to access during operating hours of the visitor center. Those visiting the area should make a point of checking out the inside of the visitor center which offers displays, films and a gift shop, as well as bathrooms and water fountains. Those looking for a shorter walk can opt to stick to a single trail - either the California Trail Overlook path at 1.1 miles total out and back, or the South Fork Overlook path at .6 miles total out and back. There is no shade on the hike, so those heading onto the path during the summer heat should plan ahead for this. Dogs are permitted on leash.Visitor Center and parking lot open hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 8:30am to 5pm, closed Sundays and Mondays. Check the Visitor Center website for complete information.
