This easy route begins at the main parking area of Hallock State Park Preserve, just off Sound Avenue near Riverhead, NY. From the trailhead, head west through maritime forest on a wide, well-maintained path. At the first junction, bear right to continue along the primary trail, which gradually approaches the bluff. Around the halfway point, side paths provide access to the beach and open views over Long Island Sound. The trail loops inland through a mix of forest and glacial erratics before reconnecting with the original path near the trailhead.
The route is mostly flat with firm footing, making it a good choice for casual day hikes on Long Island’s North Fork. Keep an eye out for shorebirds along the coast and seasonal wildflowers in forested sections. Although the trail is open year-round, winter access may be affected by snow or ice. Be prepared for ticks and poison ivy during warmer months. This peaceful shoreline route offers a close-up experience with coastal ecology and excellent views of the Sound.
