Loop
This easy hiking route begins at the main trailhead on Laurel Lake Road in Laurel, New York, and forms a gentle circuit through Laurel Lake Preserve. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked path as it winds through a dense canopy of oak, maple, and beech. The route remains mostly level throughout, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. At several points along the trail, spur paths lead to the shores of Laurel Lake, a kettle hole lake formed by glacial retreat. These side trails offer quiet spots for birding or a lakeside break.
At a signed Y-intersection, keep right to continue counter clockwise around the loop. Watch for ospreys overhead and listen for warblers in the understory. After rain, expect some muddy patches in low-lying sections. The trail eventually returns to the original junction before heading back to the trailhead. With minimal elevation change and year-round access, this route is a relaxing walk in the woods with rewarding views and abundant birdlife.
