Loop
The Log Gulch Loop begins at the Log Gulch Recreation Area near the eastern shore of Holter Lake. From the parking area, the route climbs steadily through open juniper and pine forest, gaining a low ridgeline above the lake. At a Y-intersection just beyond the initial climb, stay right to follow the loop clockwise. The trail continues along undulating terrain with frequent views of the lake’s deep-blue water and the dramatic limestone cliffs rising on the far shore.
As the route wraps inland, it passes through pockets of denser forest and seasonal wildflowers in spring. Bighorn sheep are occasionally spotted in this area, especially in the cooler hours of the day. The second half of the loop follows a gradual descent back toward the trailhead. There are no reliable natural water sources along the route—carry sufficient water, especially in warmer months. Expect limited shade and sun exposure throughout. This is one of the best day hikes near Holter Lake for wide-open views and light solitude.
