This scenic route begins at the Sands Point Preserve entrance and winds through a mix of landscaped woodlands, open lawns, and shoreline paths along the Long Island Sound. From the parking area, follow signs toward the forest trails, which form a well-marked loop around the preserve’s grounds. Several short connectors lead to overlooks and side trails that explore the property’s historic mansions and gardens. Stay on the main path to pass through groves of mature hardwoods and small glacial ridges.
The trail is wide, relatively flat, and ideal for a relaxed walk or family outing. Interpretive signage highlights both natural features and the Gilded Age history of the estate. While the route is not remote, it offers a peaceful escape from nearby neighborhoods and access to scenic coastal terrain. The trail eventually loops back toward the visitor center and parking area. Plan ahead for limited operating hours and a small entrance fee.
