Loop
The Welwyn Preserve County Park Loop begins at the main parking area off Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove and follows a network of marked paths through a diverse coastal ecosystem. From the trailhead, head north toward the tidal marshes along Long Island Sound, where raised boardwalks wind through saltwater wetlands and offer views of Hempstead Harbor. Shortly after, the route turns inland through shaded forest, passing freshwater ponds and several remnants of the former Welwyn Estate, including stone walls and garden structures.
Stay left at early trail forks to follow the outer route clockwise. Around the halfway point, the trail bends west and re-enters dense forest with gentle, rolling terrain. Keep right at Y-intersections to maintain the loop, eventually returning to the main path near the entrance. This trail is mostly flat with a few damp or muddy sections after rain. Welwyn is a popular choice for day hikes on Long Island, especially in spring and fall when birds are active and trails are dry.
