The Humes Preserve route begins at the parking area on Oyster Bay Road in Mill Neck and winds through a scenic network of woodland trails managed by the North Shore Land Alliance. From the trailhead, follow the main path as it rises gently into open meadow terrain dotted with native grasses and seasonal wildflowers. After crossing the hilltop, the trail descends into shaded deciduous forest where multiple paths intersect—stay right at the first fork to continue the primary route.
Farther along, the trail enters a wetter, low-lying area with narrow footpaths near streams and wetlands. These lead toward the edge of Shu Swamp and the Upper Francis Pond corridor, where tall trees and wetland habitat create a more secluded, natural atmosphere. Wildlife sightings may include warblers, frogs, or turtles. The route eventually loops back uphill through pine groves before reconnecting with the meadow. This is a short, varied hike ideal for day hikes near Locust Valley, especially for those interested in birding or quiet forest walks.
