The Collar Peak route begins and ends at the Limekiln Trailhead in the Judith Mountains northeast of Lewistown. From the trailhead, the route climbs gradually through dense pine and fir forest before reaching a junction—stay right to continue the route in a clockwise direction. After a steady ascent, the trail reaches open ridgelines with expanding views over the central Montana prairie. A short side path leads to the summit of Collar Peak, where hikers are rewarded with wide-ranging views of the Little Belts, Highwoods, and Snowies.
Beyond the summit, the route continues along a rounded ridgeline, passing through intermittent forest and grassy clearings. Near the far end of the loop, hikers descend into a mix of shady drainages and open slopes, eventually reconnecting with the initial trail. Along the way, watch for signs of historic mining activity near Maiden and keep an eye out for elk, deer, and raptors overhead. While the trail is generally moderate, overgrown sections and lingering spring snow may increase difficulty. Carry bear spray, and enjoy the solitude of this seldom-traveled mountain route.
