Point to Point
This demanding route begins from a pull-off on Red Hill Road in the Big Snowy Mountains, climbing steeply through forested terrain before gaining the open ridgeline near Lost Peak. From here, the route continues southward along a high, often windswept crest, requiring light scrambling and off-trail travel across exposed terrain to reach Old Baldy. Views from the ridge stretch over the Judith Gap, Musselshell River Basin, and surrounding ranges. After Old Baldy, continue following the ridgeline to intersect the Maynard Ridge Trail. Turn north here to begin a long descent through subalpine meadows and forest, eventually reconnecting with Red Hill Road near the trailhead.
Water is scarce above lower elevations, so carry enough for the entire loop. Seasonal creeks may be found near the start, but the ridge is typically dry. Wildflowers bloom through midsummer, and golden larch color the slopes in early fall. Expect minimal signage and few trail markers — strong navigation skills are critical. This route is best for experienced hikers comfortable with high-elevation travel, ridge exposure, and route-finding. The payoff is a big-mountain experience in one of central Montana’s lesser-traveled ranges.
