Starting and ending at the North Fork Highwood Trailhead, this route heads south along the Center Ridge Trail, climbing steadily through forest and meadows to a high ridgeline. At the junction with the North Fork Highwood Creek Trail, turn east and descend gradually through a mix of forest and open slopes. The route then veers briefly onto Kirby Creek, then connects to the Windy Mountain Trail. This section climbs to one of the highest points in the Highwoods, offering sweeping views across the Central Montana plains.
At the Windy Mountain–Thain Creek junction, continue east on the Thain Creek Trail, which contours through shaded forest and across several seasonal streambeds. This section descends steadily and returns to the original trailhead. Expect Class 2–3 terrain in places, especially along Windy Mountain, and be prepared for changing weather above 6,000’.
This route showcases some of the best alpine hiking near Great Falls with solitude, wildlife, and wide-open views.
